Reason to celebrate, not be angry at racists.

The most annoying part about the chatter about Hunger Games casting and racism?  People are missing the point:

http://jezebel.com/5907900/casting-of-the-hunger-games-finnick-is-stirring-up-another-race-shitstorm

Honestly this makes me even angrier:

http://jezebel.com/5896515/a-character+by+character-guide-to-race-in-the-hunger-games

Here’s why:

1. Despite Stewart and Breslaw’s attempts to correct and slam down the racist outcry’s argument that Finnick and Rue’s race is not in fact going against Collins’ vision, it shouldn’t matter how Suzanne Collins described the characters.  Even if they were clearly described as white and as pale a the moon in the book, it should be permissible to make a decision to cast against race whether to make a creative, self aware statement or to simply cast the person who brings the most talent to the table.  There are many other qualities, besides skin color, that make an actor right for a role.  Actually all qualities are better than skin color.

2. The fact that this happens every day in the opposite direction (hollywood whitewashing) and it causes proportionally very little ripple or notice makes this entire discussion a missed point on a second level.  Really, we shouldn’t be angry that there are racist people out there.  That’s just duh-doy.  We shouldn’t be focusing on the anger part at all because why give stupid people the attention they don’t deserve?  We should be celebrating the positivity of this.  It’s a wonderful step in the right direction towards a more diverse hollywood in which actors of color can be cast in roles not defined by their race.

So Yay Hollywood!

p.s. I’m going to spoil the mood of critical race theory discussion with geekiness by saying Jesse Williams has really solved the problem of Peeta vs. Gale.  The answer is neither, Katniss, neither.  Marry Finnick, or I will do it for you… so, never mind, please don’t marry Finnick.
